The Sustainable Arts Foundation is a non-profit foundation supporting artists and writers with families. The Foundation’s mission is to provide financial awards to parents pursuing creative work while raising a family. To be eligible, the applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. Given the intense demand for these awards and the fact that the awards are based on demonstrated excellence in a specific discipline, they do not recommend that artists or writers who are just starting out in their creative careers apply to this program.
Applicants are not required to have published or exhibited their work but the experience involved in that process can certainly benefit a portfolio. Portfolios of writing or artwork created in a more personal vein for sharing with friends and family are not suitable.
This year the Foundation has increased funding and will make awards of $5,000 each to twenty artists and writers. Additionally, they will name ten award finalists. The awards are unrestricted cash, and recipients can use the funds as they see fit. The program is an award program that rewards excellence in a creative field (note that this is different from a grant program, in which the application is focused on a proposal for new work).
The selection process is focused almost entirely on the strength of the submitted portfolio.
